B Lab: Private Enterprise for Public Benefit

B Lab envisions a new sector of the economy which harnesses the power of private enterprise to create public benefit.  This sector, sitting between the for-profit and non-profit sectors, is comprised of a new type of corporation – the B corporation.  B corporations are unlike traditional responsible businesses because they 1) institutionalize stakeholder interests; and 2) meet comprehensive and transparent social and environmental performance standards.

The mission of B Lab, a non-profit organization, is to support B corporations and this emerging sector by 1) developing and disseminating a legal framework to institutionalize stakeholder interests within existing corporate law; 2) certifying and rating B corporations; and 3) creating and promoting a powerful unifying brand.

By becoming a B corporation, entrepreneurs can 1) stand out as leaders; 2) grow and create liquidity without compromising their values; and 3) differentiate their business through billions of dollars of collective market presence and millions of dollars of marketing spent by B Lab promoting B corporations as distinct, and meaningful.
