Liz Hart McMillan
Liz is a long time private investor who began her angel investing in early stage companies during the US recession of 1989-1992. Several of those companies went on to have successful exits in the early to mid 90’s. Liz attended her first Investors’ Circle conference in 2001, shortly after 9/11 as a gesture of her faith in the power of entrepreneurial innovation partnered with patient capital and became a member a year later. Liz has made several investments through IC, including Voxiva, Circle Lending (now Virgin Money USA, having been acquired by Richard Branson), Metabolix, United Villages and most recently Origin Biomed. As a member of Investors’ Circle, Liz has served on several selection committees screening companies to present at the semi-annual investor fairs and conferences. Not only is Liz an early-stage investor but she is an experienced mentor to start-ups focusing on and operating in the developing world. She has mentored entrepreneurs through MicroMentor, an Aspen Institute spin-out since acquired by Mercy Corp, through Playing 2 Win, a community technology center in Harlem affiliated with Boys and Girls Harbor (and on whose board she served) and through deal flow she encounters as an angel investor. Liz also coaches and mentors at NYU’s Stern Business School’s annual business plan competition. Her mentees won the Social Enterprise Business Plan competition earlier this year. Liz has supported and consults to several non-profits focusing on community development in the US and in the developing world. Liz is a member of the Socrates Society of the Aspen Institute and is a past fellow of the Society of Fellows of the Aspen Institute. An Alumna of St. John’s College, Liz lives in East Hampton, NY with her youngest child, James, his two older sisters, Pippa and Syrie, having left the nest for Yale and St. Paul’s School; her step-son Jason, a glass-artist and photographer; and her fiancé ,Larry Green, partner in a successful family-owned commercial real estate holding corporation and also a private investor.
