Martha's Vineyard Members Retreat
June 2nd-4th, 2005Martha's Vineyard, MA -
The IC staff, board and fellow members met in June for our 2005 Martha's Vineyard Members Retreat. Beyond the great food, sailing and beautiful setting, the retreat offered members a chance to connect on a deeper level, and to nurture the relationships that make our network of concerned investors unlike any other.
The retreat began with a workshop led by Dennis Meadows, co-author of The Limits to Growth. With Dennis's unrivaled touch, the hula hoop exercise of 2004 became the straw architecture competition of 2005. Beyond leading a number of exercises that demonstrated the dynamics of positive and negative feedback loops, Dennis also shared his analysis of carious aspects of IC, examining network membership and factors involved in making the network more effective.
John Abrams, President of South Mountain Company, a worker-owned construction firm that is a beautiful example of commitment to the local community and to principles of sustainability, read from his book The Company We Keep, published in Spring 2005 by Chelsea Green Publishing.
On Saturday, members heard presentations from ten companies that are donating a significant portion of their proceeds to charity. Companies included Pura Vida Coffee, PeaceKeeper Cause-Metics, Pico Bonito, Belu Water, Humanitas Wine, Give Something Back, Working Today, Better World Telecom, and TransForms. Also featured was Untours, a company that gives away 100% of its profits and was recognized in 1999 by Newman's Own as The Most Generous Company in America.
